About the Item

Pair of Brutalist lounge armchairs manufactured by Biosca in Spain during the 1960s. The frames are dark-stained carved oak, with distinctively scalloped leg profiles that lend a sculptural, hand-worked quality to the overall form. Flat leather panels cover the seat and backrest, secured along their edges with large round iron studs at evenly spaced intervals. Broad, cantilevered armrests and a low, wide silhouette define the proportions, and an H-stretcher connects the front and rear legs at the base. Biosca positioned these chairs as a Brutalist reinterpretation of traditional 18th-century Spanish craft furniture. The scalloped leg carving and iron studding draw directly from Baroque-era Spanish Colonial woodworking conventions, while the flat-panel leather and stripped-down structural logic push the form firmly into modernist territory. The result sits at a productive tension between folk craft and mid-20th century design thinking. The chairs have wear consistent with their age and use. The leather shows visible surface scratching and creasing, particularly across the seat panels.
