About the Item

18th century, Pair of Tuscany Turned Walnut Stools Dimensions: 39 x 39 x H 71 cm; seat 26 x 26 cm This pair of turned walnut stools was made in Tuscany in the early years of the 18th century. Their well balanced structure features a quadrangular seat with rounded corners, designed to offer greater comfort in use. The apron beneath the seat is embellished on its flat sides by a recessed carved moulding that enriches the profile, creates a play of light and shadow, and lends additional lightness to the design. Raised corner blocks, set on the diagonal, support the four legs, which splay outwards and give the stools their truncated pyramidal shape. The legs are finely turned, animated by elegant mouldings rhythmically articulated along their shafts. The stretchers connecting the legs at the base show a pleasing, authentic wear from use, bearing witness to the long life of the piece and to its original function. These stools were in fact most likely conceived for use in a choir. Highly charming, versatile and decorative, they adapt perfectly to domestic interiors, where they can be used as kitchen stools or as refined stands for vases, sculptures or small decorative objects. The overall line, with its strong sculptural presence, allows these stools to fit effortlessly into both historic interiors and contemporary settings, where they will bring a touch of warmth, authenticity and antique character.
