Contemporary Straw Man Charcoal Drawing on Archival Paper

By David Becker

Located in Chicago, IL

Straw Man by David Becker is a haunting vine charcoal drawing that stages a psychologically charged encounter between two figures caught in a moment of uneasy confrontation. Rendered with meticulous tonal depth and expressive realism, the composition juxtaposes symbols of violence, fear, and mortality—a raised knife, a skull-topped object, and a tattoo reading "FEAR"—against the intimate setting of a tabletop. Becker's masterful use of charcoal creates an atmosphere that is both dreamlike and unsettling, inviting viewers to contemplate themes of vulnerability, power, and the fragile boundary between reality and psychological allegory.
