Aya Toshikawa, the artistic luminary known by the alias Lady Kawai, orchestrates a captivating dance between the boundless dynamism of animation and the nuanced realm of fine arts. Her medium of choice is the oil canvas, a surface where her hand-drawn techniques weave a tapestry that blurs the boundaries between movement and stillness. Born in the vibrant city of Kobe, Toshikawa embarked on her creative odyssey within the enchanting realms of toys and games, eventually metamorphosing from a visionary animator into a distinguished fine artist. With roots deeply entrenched in the aesthetic language of manga, Toshikawa's oil paintings serve as explorations into realms that traverse the provocative. Within her compositions, one encounters an assembly of characters: baby-faced and alluring young girls, each a testament to her adeptness at distilling the quintessence of manga aesthetics. This unique blend has not only garnered acclaim within Japan but has reverberated across international borders, painting her as a luminary on the global art stage. The global diaspora of Toshikawa's exhibitions spans from the romantic streets of Paris to the bustling metropolises of Seoul. In each showcase, she unfurls the stylistic banner of manga with its hallmark features — prominent eyes and hair cascading like a waterfall. Toshikawa's characters, adorned in minimalist attire, extend a beguiling invitation to the audience, beckoning them into a whimsical domain where allure and innocence coalesce seamlessly. From the rudimentary strokes of basic animations to the intricacies of oil paintings, Toshikawa's artistic evolution is an ever-unfolding narrative. Her canvases, whether portraying the guileless facade of innocence or the seductive allure of womanhood, retain the essence of manga. It is a testament to her ability to transcend mediums, ensuring that her originality transcends the borders between animation and fine arts.
Toshikawa's artistic footprint extends far beyond the archipelago of Japan, with exhibitions that resonate in cultural capitals such as Paris, London, Hong Kong, and Seoul. Her distinct style has become an indomitable force within the global tapestry of manga, a form of Japanese comics cherished worldwide. Each stroke of her brush, each meticulously crafted character, contributes to the legacy of manga, and, in turn, to the indelible mark she has left on both the animated and painted worlds.
In seamlessly integrating the vivacity of animation into the refined precincts of fine arts, Toshikawa not only showcases her technical prowess but also reveals a boundless creative spirit. What began as simple animations burgeoned into intricate oil paintings, a transformation that retains the inherent simplicity of manga. Toshikawa, with an unwavering trust in the viewer's imagination, metamorphoses her characters into vessels of innocence or embodiments of seduction. Her distinctiveness, marked by an ethereal quality, persists as a resounding echo in both animation and painting, a testament to the enduring legacy of Aya Toshikawa in shaping the landscapes of these twin creative realms.

The Dissidents: Discourse on the Golden Mean
By Michael Tole
Located in New Orleans, LA
Michael Tole says of his work… This work draws a connection between the didactic moralizing tendencies of Neo Classicism (represented in the style of the painting) and Modernism (represented in the architectural setting). Though modern art eschews the naturalistic imagery used by Neo Classicists, both movements pursued a self-important, austere, self-consciously masculine aesthetic that they saw as synonymous with virtue. Set in the MoMA courtyard, a passel of men lounge about, regarding a golden statue which looks terribly out of place in this modernist vitrine. The uncomfortable architectural setting, prisonlike and cold, provides a foil for the odalisque-like young men sprawled on hard stone benches and paying homage to the central idol. In my current work, The Revisionist Histories, I am writing letters to art history, literature, and mythology in an attempt to reflect the social changes that have reshaped our society over the past century. As part of this agenda, I explore the evolution of gender norms, power dynamics, and representation within Western visual culture and what this implies for the negotiation between pleasure, justice, and our culturally specific discourse on beauty. The seed for The Revisionist Histories was sewn when I caught a glimpse of my preteen daughters watching music videos on their iPad as I chopped veggies for dinner. Out of the corner of my eye I caught glimpses of music videos featuring Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, and Doja Cat gyrating across the tiny screen. A better parent might have snatched the iPad away, but I was overcome with hallucinatory visions of this pop diva...
