DESCRIPTION
Atmospheric 1975 Catalan landscape by Spanish painter Antonio Sala Herrero, depicting Castellar del Vallès, a historic town and natural landscape in Catalonia, near Barcelona.
Painted with a loose, expressive brushstroke, the composition captures the rugged terrain, dense vegetation and architecture of the area through a rich palette of deep greens, earthy reds, ochres, mauves and cool blue-grey tones.
Rather than describing the landscape with photographic precision, Sala Herrero builds the scene through broad masses of color and spontaneous painterly gestures. The result is an evocative, almost tactile interpretation of the Catalan countryside, in which atmosphere and chromatic rhythm take precedence over detail.
A bridge appears at the right of the composition, while the elevated buildings and vegetation create a layered sense of depth. The subdued sky and dense foreground give the painting a particularly intimate and atmospheric character.
The reverse of the canvas bears the artist’s inscription identifying the work as a landscape of “Castellar del Vallès” and dating it Barcelona, 1975.
BIOGRAPHY
Antonio Sala Herrero was a Spanish painter born in Barcelona in 1927 and active principally during the second half of the 20th century.
Largely self-taught, he developed an early interest in drawing and painting and became especially known for landscapes, Mediterranean coastal scenes, harbors and views of Catalonia.
His first documented solo exhibition took place at the Sala Municipal in Figueres in 1967. From then onward, Sala Herrero exhibited regularly in galleries and exhibition spaces in Barcelona and throughout Spain, including Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and Valencia.
He received several artistic distinctions during his career, among them the Vila de Palamós Prize in 1969 and a recognition associated with the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1983.
Sala Herrero’s painting is particularly associated with Mediterranean landscapes, ports and coastal towns such as Cadaqués, Palamós and Llafranc. His works are characterized by loose brushwork, strong atmospheric effects and a vivid but nuanced use of color.
