About the Item

This 1964 Soviet poster by E. Artsrunyan celebrates the achievements of collective agriculture in the Soviet Union, presenting the kolkhoz (collective farm) as a source of prosperity and pride. The slogan “Колхозное спасибо!” translates as “Thanks to the collective farm!”, a phrase that conveys both gratitude and ideological affirmation of the collectivized agricultural system. At the center of the composition stands an elderly farmer, depicted with a white beard and weathered features, embodying wisdom, experience, and continuity between generations. He holds a copy of Pravda, the official newspaper of the Communist Party, suggesting not only literacy and political awareness but also the connection between everyday rural life and the broader ideological framework of the state. His expression is calm and satisfied, reinforcing the message that collective farming brings stability and fulfillment. Behind him stretches a golden wheat field, symbolizing abundance and successful harvests. The warm tones—yellows, ochres, and reds—create a sense of richness and optimism, typical of Socialist Realist imagery. The visual harmony between the man and the land emphasizes the unity between the Soviet people and their environment, shaped through collective labor. The inclusion of Pravda is particularly significant. It implies that the achievements of agriculture are recognized and validated at the national level, while also reinforcing the role of media as a tool for spreading ideological messages. The farmer is not isolated; he is part of a system that informs, organizes, and celebrates collective success. Produced during the 1960s, a period marked by efforts to modernize and improve agricultural output, the poster reflects ongoing campaigns to promote the effectiveness of the kolkhoz system. While earlier decades often depicted more heroic or industrialized visions, this image focuses on the human dimension—gratitude, dignity, and everyday life within socialism. Ultimately, Колхозное спасибо! serves as both praise and persuasion. It thanks the collective farm for its contributions while encouraging continued faith in collectivized agriculture. Through its warm imagery and clear symbolism, the poster presents the kolkhoz not merely as an economic structure, but as a cornerstone of Soviet society and identity. 1972 soviet poster by the legendary Viktor Koretsky - Let’s Preserve and Raise!

By Viktor Koretsky

Located in PARIS, FR

A luminous artifact of Soviet visual propaganda, this 1972 poster by the legendary Viktor Koretsky embodies the powerful optimism and ideological clarity of late-stage socialist realism. Titled “Сохраним и вырастим!” — “Let’s Preserve and Raise!” — the poster was part of a campaign promoting agricultural productivity and humane animal husbandry during the Brezhnev-era push for rural modernization. Rendered in Koretsky’s unmistakable photomontage style, the composition presents a radiant, smiling woman — a collective farm worker or veterinary technician — bottle-feeding a calf. Her expression, almost saintly in its warmth, becomes a symbol of maternal care projected onto the state’s vision of stewardship over the land and its creatures. The background, suffused with an almost neon green pasture and meticulously ordered barns, represents the ideological fantasy of agricultural abundance. Unlike many Western posters...
