About the Item

Signed lower left: Purdy A very cool example of mid-century 50"s abstraction. Harbor is done in a style that was being experimented with particularly in the New York and California schools of artists. Many were abstracting off scenes or subjects and leaving enough subject that the viewer could distinguish what the scene is. Here it is clearly perhaps a night view and the artist is capturing either a setting sun or lights in the distance - peeking through sails and boats. Purdy at this time would apply oil paint and then rub it away to create layers of washy depth on the surface - a dreamlike feel to what one is seeing. He was also influenced by artists such as Redon and Nolde and once one knows that you can see where he drawing upon in his own work. Art such as this melds well with mid-century furniture. The art inside the frame measures 24 x 39.75 inches Signed in the lower right "purdy" Purdy later moved away from abstraction as some artists did. so these works from this era are rare by him. He had a full and successful career painting in Wilton, CT and at the time of this work - was painting in New Haven, CT. He would have been drawing upon his knowledge of the marinas along the coast and areas such as Norwalk Ct where he grew up. The frame is not original. It is a good quality frame with wear and imperfections at this point. It also has a liner in it. The painting could be re-framed to a different style to one's preference or hand it as is. Ocean Blue Abstract Expressionist

Ocean Blue Abstract Expressionist

By Jerzy Kubina

Ocean Large Blue Abstract Expressionist artist signed and titled. Jerzy Kubina Polish/American Artist: Jerzy was born in Zamosc, Poland, 1956. Studied at the Academy Of Fine Arts in Krakow 1981/1986 in the painting department under individual instructions of prof. Jan Szancenbach. He decided to immigrate to New York in 1986. Jerzy constructs large scale images on silk using technologies to create layers, textures, translucency. He is searching for a language that expresses the ideas inside. Sometimes the paintings are quiet and translucent, and then suddenly become very dramatic. There is a symbiotic relationship between him and the materials. Jerzy Kubina has exhibited his work widely in the US, including at Soho New York's first-ever gallery, the esteemed O. K. Harris. He has also shown internationally, in Paris, Poland and Mexico. Kubina graduated Magna Cum Laude from the M. A. program of The Academy of Fine Arts, Cracow, Poland. Artist Statement. "I do not limit myself to a classical representation of an image. I'm in constant search of new media which not only enriches the subject but also inspires me to new forms of expression. Visual appreciation is a creative exercise performed in a specified time and a specific emotional state. The subject must be individual and unique. I do not attempt to keep a tight rein on my art’s framework, but give myself the opportunity to individualize each of the works. My present concerns are of the sacred and the profane, always longing for harmony, accompanied by destruction and devastation, my inner world translates that pulse into color images. My new works are a continuation of the process of creating art for art's sake.
