About the Item

This tapestry, which is based on a design by Gerhard Munthe, was woven by an unknown weaver working from Norway and is unsigned. It is woven in a large and simple flat design, using a combination of tapestry joining techniques. The age of the piece suggests creation around 1900 to 1920. The tapestry is in excellent condition with no damage showing. It measures 44 3\4 inches high and 56 inches across. It depicts the Norse myth showing three polar bears who come to three sisters in their bedchamber. The title is “Suitors,” or “Daughters of the Northern Lights.” Gerhard Munthe (1849-1929) was a Norwegian painter, illustrator and decorative artist. Proponent of the Scandinavian Arts & Crafts movement, he revolutionized Norwegian textile art. While living in Munich between 1877 and 1882, he painted in a naturalist style. Inspired by the principles of the aesthetic movement and the fashion for Japanese design, however, Munthe started experimenting with decorative arts in the 1890s. His illustrations and tapestries feature stylized motifs taken from ancient Norse mythology.
