About the Item

A beautifully preserved late 17th-century embroidered silk and metallic thread textile panel, likely English and dating to the late Stuart period, circa 1680–1700. The panel is worked in coloured silks and gilt-metal thread with an exuberant Baroque design of scrolling foliage, flowering stems and stylised blooms arranged in a finely balanced symmetrical composition. Richly decorative yet remarkably refined, the embroidery retains an unusually attractive palette of soft blues, sage greens, straw yellows and warm pinks, colours that have survived with exceptional freshness for a textile of this age. Likely this was originally part of a bed hanging or coverlet The design displays many of the characteristics associated with the luxurious furnishing textiles produced for the interiors of affluent English and European houses during the late 17th century. Originally forming part of a larger decorative furnishing scheme—possibly a bed hanging, valance, coverlet or interior panel—it survives today as a striking work of textile art in its own right. The original silk ground has naturally deteriorated and perished in areas over the course of more than three centuries, a condition commonly encountered in early silk textiles. Importantly, the embroidered decoration remains substantially intact and retains considerable visual impact, creating a compelling balance between beauty, age and authenticity. The textile has been professionally conserved and presented in a museum-quality conservation frame by John James Conservation Framing, London, one of Britain’s leading specialists in the preservation and display of historic works on paper and textiles. Equally suited to a traditional country house interior, a curated collection of historic textiles, or a contemporary decorative setting, this rare survival offers the colour, craftsmanship and character that only centuries-old handmade textiles can provide. Antique Spanish Carpet

Located in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire

This exquisite early-twentieth-century carpet was produced in Alcaraz, Spain. This carpet is an excellent example of the formal mandate to develop a distinctively Spanish style of artwork. It is an allover design that is in cream and green. The pink border sets the carpet off. Alcaraz is a region in Southern Castile and is thought to be one of the first centres to produce these new designs. The colours of the antique Spanish rugs became muted due to experimentation with new dyestuffs. Also, the skill of the Moorish master carpet dyers was lost. Many of these antique Alcaraz carpets...
