About the Item

This print is part of a series titled "Studies van koeien, schapen en geiten" (Studies of Cows, Sheep, and Goats). The print was made by Anthony Oberman, a printmaker. Anthony Oberman (1781-1845) was a Dutch artist known for his detailed and realistic depictions of animals. His work often focused on studies of various farm animals, capturing their features with precision and skill. Oberman's prints are characterized by their fine lines and meticulous attention to detail, which is evident in this print of a lamb's head. This print by Anthony Oberman is an etching that depicts a serene pastoral scene featuring three sheep. Here is a detailed description: Composition: 1. Foreground Sheep: - The foreground features a sheep lying down on the grass, with its body turned slightly away from the viewer. The detailed etching captures the texture of its wool, emphasizing the natural curl and thickness typical of sheep. 2. Middle-ground Sheep: - Behind the foreground sheep, another sheep is partially visible, standing and looking to the right. This sheep is positioned behind a rustic wooden fence, adding depth and perspective to the scene. 3. Background Sheep: - In the background, another sheep is seen grazing or resting, partially obscured by the fence and the middle-ground sheep. This sheep adds to the layered composition, creating a sense of a peaceful and natural farm setting. Artistic Elements: - Technique: The etching technique allows for fine details, particularly in the depiction of the wool and the texture of the wooden fence. The use of light and shadow is meticulous, giving the print a three-dimensional quality. - Composition: The arrangement of the three sheep creates a balanced and harmonious composition, guiding the viewer’s eye through the scene from the foreground to the background. - Background: The background is kept relatively simple, focusing on the immediate environment around the sheep and the fence, thus emphasizing the main subjects. Condition: - The paper shows signs of aging, such as slight yellowing and some minor spots, which is typical for prints of this age. - There is a noticeable stain on the left side of the paper, which could affect the overall aesthetic value but does not seem to interfere with the main image area. Overall Impression: This print exemplifies Oberman's skill in capturing the tranquil and everyday scenes of farm life with precision and artistic sensitivity. The detailed portrayal of the sheep and their environment showcases his ability to render textures and forms convincingly, making this etching a valuable piece for those interested in historical prints and pastoral art. The signature and date on the print indicate that it was created in May 1810. Oberman's prints were likely used as reference materials for other artists or for educational purposes, given their accuracy and detail. This particular series includes an edition size of 20 prints. THE TECHNIQUE USED: The technique used for the print "Kop van een lam" by Anthony Oberman is etching. Etching is a printmaking process that involves using acid to carve into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in the metal. The metal plate is then inked, and the ink is transferred to paper to create the print. This technique allows for fine detail and intricate line work, which is evident in Oberman's detailed depiction of these sheep.
