About the Item

A refined 18th-century English gateleg table, finely crafted from walnut and distinguished by its practical drop-leaf construction, elegant cabriole legs and beautifully figured timber. The table incorporates hinged drop leaves that allow it to transform from a remarkably compact form into a generously proportioned surface. When closed, the depth measures just 35.5 cm, making the piece particularly convenient for positioning against a wall or within a smaller interior. Fully extended, the depth increases to 101.5 cm, providing a substantial surface for dining, entertaining or display. The leaves are supported by the traditional gateleg mechanism, combining practical versatility with the ingenuity characteristic of early English furniture. The table is raised upon gracefully shaped cabriole legs terminating in traditional pad feet, creating an elegant and beautifully balanced silhouette. Particularly appealing is the walnut itself, displaying pronounced natural grain and attractive figuring throughout. Rich, warm colour and a mature patina developed through centuries of age and use give the piece considerable depth and authentic period character. Very well constructed and presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use consistent with its 18th-century origin. A highly versatile example of Georgian furniture, equally suitable as an occasional table, dining table or console-style table when closed. Its combination of compact storage and substantial extended proportions makes it particularly practical for contemporary interiors.
