About the Item

Exceptional Italian Modernist Sculptural Dining Table with Asymmetrical Aluminum and Carved Wood Base, circa 1970s An exceptional and highly sophisticated vintage modernist dining table, dating to circa 1970s, distinguished by its remarkable sculptural base and unconventional asymmetrical design. The table is conceived almost as a work of modernist sculpture, comprising two substantial, individually formed aluminum supports of organic, asymmetrical configuration, joined by a beautifully sculpted and hand-carved wooden element. The three components are ingeniously constructed to interlock, creating a highly original architectural composition with a strong sense of balance and movement. The substantial approximately ⅔-inch-thick shatter-resistant glass top is itself subtly asymmetrical rather than conventionally rectangular. This intentional irregularity enhances the sculptural quality of the design and allows the unusual base to remain visible from virtually every angle. Particularly striking is the contrast between the cool, silvery aluminum, the warm organic character of the carved wood and the transparency of the glass. The softly modeled, biomorphic forms of the aluminum supports recall the vocabulary of European modernist sculpture, with echoes of the organic abstraction associated with artists such as Jean Arp, while the sophisticated construction and restrained use of materials place the table firmly within the finest traditions of 20th-century European modern design. The table is signed indistinctly in two places, although the signatures or maker's marks have not yet been conclusively deciphered. The identity of the designer or manufacturer remains unidentified at present. Nevertheless, the quality of the conception, materials, craftsmanship and highly individual sculptural language strongly suggest that this is the work of a significant, yet as-yet-unidentified, designer or maker. A particularly rare and visually compelling example of collectible modernist furniture, this table would make an impressive centerpiece in a sophisticated contemporary, modernist or eclectic interior. Circa 1970s, Europe, maker unidentified. Condition: Good vintage condition, with signs of age and use consistent with the period. The aluminum and carved wood display an attractive aged surface. The glass top is substantial and in keeping with the original design.
