About the Item

Striking Modern Console Table by Curtis Norton — a sculptural work of functional design in welded and polished stainless steel, topped with 1/2" tempered glass. This exceptional piece blurs the boundary between industrial precision and fine art, showcasing Norton’s signature command of material and form. Remarkably, Curtis Norton is a self-taught artist and fabricator, and his mastery of technique is apparent in every facet of this piece. The complex form begins as an intricate pattern, carefully transferred to stainless steel sheets. Each component is cut, formed, tack-welded, and then fully welded and chased by hand, with multiple rounds of sanding and polishing to achieve a luminous, mirror-like finish. The result is a sleek yet tactile surface that reveals the labor of its making. This table is rooted in Postmodern design — a movement that rejected the rigid functionality and minimalism of Modernism in favor of expressiveness, wit, historical reference, and material play. Postmodernism embraced contradiction, hybrid forms, and an element of surprise. Norton's use of a traditional furniture typology (the console table), rendered in industrial stainless steel with an almost jewel-like finish, exemplifies this spirit. It’s bold and elegant, serious and playful, with a confident awareness of both high design and fabrication technique. Far more than just furniture, this is a functional sculpture, grounded in craftsmanship and infused with the intellectual and aesthetic complexity of Postmodern art and design.
