About the Item

An exceptional Mid-Century Brutalist coffee table featuring a spectacular hand-painted ceramic tile tableau inspired by prehistoric cave paintings. Composed of fifteen individually hand-painted tiles, the artwork depicts hunters, deer, bison and a wild boar in a dynamic composition reminiscent of the celebrated cave art of Lascaux and Altamira. Richly textured glazes, expressive brushwork and a warm palette of cream, ochre, orange, black and green create remarkable depth, making the tabletop a true work of ceramic art rather than simply a functional surface. The ceramic artwork consists of twenty individually hand-painted tiles, forming a continuous panoramic composition of archers, deer, bison, wild boar and stylized prehistoric figures. The lower right corner bears the artist's monogram, confirming the work as an original studio creation rather than a mass-produced decorative tile panel. Surrounding the ceramic composition is a beautifully figured solid light oak frame whose warm natural grain perfectly complements the earthy colors of the glazed tiles. The contrast between the refined oak and the expressive ceramic artwork gives the piece an elegant yet powerful presence. The sculptural solid oak trestle base is equally impressive, executed with traditional pegged mortise-and-tenon construction and displaying the honest craftsmanship associated with Brutalist furniture of the 1960s. The substantial construction gives the table both visual strength and exceptional stability. One of the most appealing features is its versatility: the complete ceramic panel can easily be removed from the base, allowing it to be displayed as a large wall-mounted ceramic artwork. As such, the piece functions equally well as a sculptural coffee table or as an impressive decorative art panel. Although the artist has not yet been identified, the style strongly reflects the high-quality studio ceramics produced in France and Belgium during the 1960s, combining primitive cave-art imagery with the expressive ceramic techniques popular during the Mid-Century period. A highly decorative and unusual collector's piece that perfectly bridges furniture, ceramic art and sculpture. Dimensions Width: 87 cm (34.25 in) Depth: 57 cm (22.44 in) Height: 55 cm (21.65 in) Materials Solid oak, hand-painted glazed ceramic. Very good vintage condition with a beautiful age-related patina to the oak frame. The ceramic tile panel is well preserved and displays only minor wear consistent with age and careful use. The natural variations, texture and craquelure in the glaze are inherent to the artistic production process and contribute to the character of the piece.
