About the Item

What-Not Shelf attributed to Lorenz Frølich, Denmark, ca. 1895 Of open rectangular form in pitch pine, fitted with eight graduated shelves supported by four square-section uprights with ebonised detail and faceted pyramid finials, raised on small turned feet. The severe rectilinear structure, articulated solely through the contrast between the warm pitch pine and the ebonised accents, reflects the influence of the English Arts and Crafts movement on Danish furniture design of the 1890s — honesty of construction and material integrity elevated above surface ornament. The piece was very likely designed by Lorenz Frølich (1820–1908), the celebrated Danish illustrator, painter and designer whose long career encompassed book illustration, decorative arts and furniture design. Frølich spent many decades in Paris where he absorbed the influence of the French decorative arts reform movement before returning to Denmark. A related example of his furniture from 1895, a chair of similar design form, is held in the collection of Designmuseum Danmark and illustrated in the literature. Measurements: Height: 145 cm (57.1 in) Width: 62 cm (24.4 in) Depth: 45 cm (17.7 in) The shelf is in good original condition retaining its original finish and ebonised details throughout. Literature: Lorenz Frølich — helt sin egen, Kunstindustrimuseet, 2009, a closely related chair of 1895 in the collection of Designmuseum Danmark illustrated, fig. 434.
