Venetian Pastural Paint Decorated Maitland Smith Attributed Dresser Commode

Dimensions: 35.25 inches wide x 45.25 inches wide x 24.75 inches wide Rich in character, history, and old-world craftsmanship, this exceptional 18th century Italian Venetian paint decorated commode embodies the romance and artistry that have made Venetian furniture among the most coveted forms of European decorative arts. Featuring a beautifully serpentine form, hand-painted decoration, and an authentically aged surface developed over centuries, this remarkable commode captures the elegance and grandeur of Italy's most celebrated artistic period. Crafted during the 18th century, the commode displays the graceful bombe silhouette and flowing curves associated with the finest Venetian furniture. The undulating façade creates a dynamic sense of movement while showcasing the extraordinary skill of the cabinetmaker. Every contour and proportion reflects the refined aesthetic sensibilities that defined Venetian interiors during the height of the Republic's artistic and cultural influence. The case retains an exceptional paint decorated finish with a beautifully mellowed patina acquired through generations of use. Layers of soft olive-green, cream, and warm terracotta tones create a rich visual depth that only authentic period furniture can achieve. The naturally distressed painted surface reveals centuries of character and contributes significantly to the piece's decorative appeal, making it an ideal statement furnishing for both traditional and contemporary interiors. The commode features three generously proportioned drawers arranged in a highly desirable configuration. Each drawer is framed by elegant hand-painted cartouche motifs highlighted with contrasting decorative accents and period-inspired detailing. The shaped drawer fronts follow the serpentine movement of the case, creating a harmonious and sophisticated architectural composition. Original iron hardware and escutcheons further enhance the authenticity of the piece while providing a striking contrast against the softly aged painted finish. The shaped apron and gracefully curved cabriole legs complete the design, lending the commode a sense of lightness and elegance despite its substantial presence. Venetian furniture of the 18th century is celebrated for its unique combination of sculptural form, painted decoration, and luxurious yet relaxed aesthetic.
