About the Item

J.A.D.A Galerie presents: A pair of Spanish cabinets from the middle of the twentieth century, built in the carpentry tradition of the northern provinces, where domestic furniture kept the heavy panelling and forged fittings of much older work long after the rest of Europe had set them aside. Each case stands on its own open base of squared legs joined by low stretchers, lifting the cabinet well above the floor. The doors are divided into coffered squares, every panel cut in relief and set within its own moulded frame, with two drawers below carrying the same treatment. The hardware is forged iron, hinges, latches and drop pulls, left in a blackened finish. The oak has been stripped back to a pale tone that softens the depth of the carving and keeps the grain readable. Used together they can flank a fireplace or a bed, and separated they work as a hall cabinet or a bedside piece. The two cases match in carving, hardware and proportion.
