About the Item

A Japanese antique small cabinet with a removable front panel, dating to the Edo period (late 18th–mid 19th century). Constructed from high-quality sugi (Japanese cedar), the surface has developed a deep, subdued tone and rich patina through age and use. The cabinet features a removable front lid known as “Kendon". The panel is reinforced and decorated with antique iron rivets, a distinctive and relatively uncommon element for small cabinets of this type. It adds both structural integrity and a subtle industrial character. Designed for practical storage, the interior offers a well-proportioned compartment with an internal shelf, allowing for efficient organization. The natural wood interior provides a warm contrast to the darkened exterior, emphasizing the material honesty of the piece. Compact yet substantial, the cabinet is durable enough for continued functional use while also serving as a sculptural storage object within a contemporary interior. A refined example of Japanese vernacular furniture from the Edo period, where utilitarian design and quiet aesthetic sensibility coexist.
