About the Item

Dutch Modernist Wall Shelving Unit, Teak and Black Metal, 1950s. This freestanding shelving unit pairs black lacquered steel wire side frames with four teak shelves, following the modular ladder principle popularized in the Netherlands and Scandinavia during the postwar years. The wire uprights create an open architectural silhouette, allowing the warm teak shelves to appear suspended in space. The teak boards rest on hooked metal brackets that slot into the graduated wire frames, making the shelving unit adjustable in height and configuration. The contrast between the graphic black metal structure and the honeyed grain of the teak shelving gives the piece a light, airy presence suited to display or book storage. The construction reflects the practical, space-conscious design ethos of the 1950s modular shelving movement. Good vintage condition. Minor surface marks and wear to the teak and metal consistent with age and use.
