About the Item

This stunning, iconic Serpentine Cloud sofa was designed by the late Vladimir Kagan for Directional, circa the 1970s. The sofa features Kagan's signature Serpentine design, with sensuous curves that are both elegant and functional. Kagan, inspired by his early 1950s Kagan-Dreyfuss 'Serpentine' sofa and his later 'Shorty' sofa, designed his popular and classic, always-in-demand Cloud sofa for Directional Furniture with all of its sensuous Post-Modern curves and signature lucite bar fitted between two cylindrical bases. This sofa is in the style with the more in-demand center back vs the style which has the wraparound arm. Vladimir Kagan is considered a master of modern design, and his work has been highly sought-after and collected for decades. Original Directional labels remain attached underneath. Note: This sofa is currently undergoing restoration at Hobbs Modern. The photographs shown reflect its current in-progress condition and are intended to illustrate the form and scale of the piece. Few furniture designers captured the spirit of American modernism with the same sense of movement and sensuality as Vladimir Kagan. Throughout his career, Kagan rejected rigid geometry in favor of organic forms that invited conversation, comfort, and interaction. His iconic serpentine sofas remain among the most recognizable seating designs of the twentieth century, prized for their flowing silhouettes and remarkable ability to anchor a room. This exceptional Vladimir Kagan Serpentine Sofa is an extraordinary oversized example, measuring an impressive 135 inches long. Its sweeping, curved profile creates an architectural presence rarely found in contemporary seating, making it equally suited to expansive living rooms, luxury residences, hospitality spaces, and statement interiors. The generous proportions comfortably accommodate multiple guests whilst encouraging conversation. Kagan’s signature sculptural curves create movement and interest in the room. One end ends in a dramatic 48-inch-diameter circular lounge section, creating the perfect place to stretch out with a book or gather around a coffee table. Rather than simply providing seating, the sofa becomes the architectural centerpiece of the room, defining the space with its graceful, uninterrupted silhouette. The low-slung profile reflects Vladimir Kagan's philosophy that furniture should appear to float effortlessly within a room. With a 15.5-inch seat height and a generous 24.5-inch seat depth, it offers the relaxed comfort that has made Vladimir Kagan’s designs favorites among collectors, interior designers, and architects for decades. The upholstery is original and in good condition. We can reupholster this impactful piece, giving the future owner the unique opportunity to customize the sofa to their exact specifications. Whether your vision calls for luxurious mohair, rich bouclé, textured wool, performance fabric, or premium leather, our in-house upholstery team can tailor the sofa to complement your interior. We are happy to work with your preferred fabric, help you source the perfect textile, or upholster the piece in COM material for a truly bespoke presentation. Once completed, we will professionally restore this monumental Kagan sofa to the highest standards while preserving the integrity of the original design. Large-scale examples of this iconic model are increasingly difficult to source, making this an exceptional opportunity to acquire a museum-worthy statement piece customized specifically for your home.
