About the Item

The Serpentine (The Snake) is a contemporary sofa by Greg Palombo. It is a 21st-century take on Vladimir Kagan's lineage of curved seating, whose work is a landmark of modern design. We set out to reimagine its form, materials, and approach to color for a distinctly new rendition. The result is a collectible piece whose design and craftsmanship speak to the values of authentically designed and made contemporary furniture that carries on the lineage of design discourse. Traditionally, sofas draw their warmth and softness from a fully upholstered frame and we wanted to preserve this feeling but shake it up with a different material. We wrapped the bent plywood frame in cork to give the sofa the same visual and tactile softness but in a more unexpected material. Because the frame and cushions are separate entities, we could break from the typical monochrome sofa and let the warmth of the natural cork stand in contrast with the upholstery. To do this we chose a deep blue wool fabric to adorn the cushions. Each material keeps its own character, and juxtapose well together. The design is complex, unexpected, and considered. It departs from how seating is traditionally designed, and made, while keeping the qualities that make seating look and feel comfortable. The proportions are generous and low. The seat sits 16 inches high and is 24 inches deep, which invites you to settle in rather than perch. The cushions are built in layers of foam, soft at the surface and denser toward the base, so the top feels plush and the support builds as you sink in. The built in side tables are a nice added function and call to the Mid-Century design work of Adrian Pearsall. Greg Palombo is an emerging voice in American furniture design whose research-driven process is rooted in the history of architecture and furniture. Historic archetypes and ideas are reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, exploring new possibilities in form, materials, and function. We bring an exploratory and fresh perspective to furniture in the 21st century. Through our work we honor the legacy of carpentry and craftsmanship through solid-wood construction and exceptional build quality. Each piece is built to last generations, and all pieces from our shop include a lifetime warranty covering defects in materials and craftsmanship. We proudly stand behind our work and the people who purchase our pieces.
