About the Item

Late 19th-Century Egyptian Moorish Walnut Mashrabiya Settee An exceptional late-19th-century Egyptian Moorish settee, handcrafted in dark-finished walnut and distinguished by its intricate mashrabiya turnings, geometric inlay and newly upholstered antique Moroccan silk. Both architectural and highly decorative, this impressive antique sofa embodies the sophisticated craftsmanship associated with Egyptian and Islamic decorative arts of the 19th century. The tall, elaborately constructed back features a long gallery of finely turned spindle-and-ball elements arranged in the traditional mashrabiya manner. Above the gallery, three sculptural cresting sections are centered by circular star-form medallions surrounded by contrasting geometric inlay. Turned posts, ball finials, pierced details and slender architectural moldings create an exceptionally layered silhouette while preserving the visual lightness characteristic of fine Middle Eastern furniture. The dark walnut frame provides a dramatic contrast to the antique Moroccan silk upholstery. Recently reupholstered, the generous seat and back display repeating Moorish arch, palmette and foliate motifs in sophisticated shades of cocoa brown, taupe, parchment and muted gray. The back is arranged in three distinctive arch-shaped panels, echoing the triple architectural rhythm of the carved crest above. The aged silk brings softness, depth and historic character to the precise geometry of the handcrafted wooden frame. Made in Egypt during the late 19th century, the settee reflects the era’s international fascination with Turkish, Ottoman, Spanish-Moorish and Islamic design. Furniture of this character was particularly admired in British Colonial and European Orientalist interiors, where Egyptian mashrabiya woodwork, intricate inlay and luxurious textiles were collected for libraries, smoking rooms, salons and exotic revival interiors. Measuring 71 inches wide, the settee offers comfortable seating for two or three people while maintaining an elegant, upright profile. Its 27-inch depth makes it suitable for a formal living room, library, entry hall, bedroom or collector’s salon where a full-depth contemporary sofa might feel too substantial. The dramatic 46-inch-high back gives the piece a strong architectural presence, making it equally compelling as functional seating or as a statement work of decorative art. This antique Egyptian settee would be especially striking in a Moorish, Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, British Colonial, Ottoman-inspired, maximalist or sophisticated eclectic interior. It could also provide a richly layered counterpoint to contemporary artwork and modern furnishings. Dimensions: 46 in. H × 71 in. W × 27 in. D Seat height: 17 in. Early 20th Century Middle Eastern Carved Walnut Mashrabiya Settee, 1920s–1930s

Early 20th Century Middle Eastern Carved Walnut Mashrabiya Settee, 1920s–1930s

Located in Moreno Valley, CA

An exceptional early 20th-century Middle Eastern settee, attributed to Egypt or the Levant—possibly present-day Lebanon or Syria—and dating to approximately the 1920s–1930s. A precise modern country of origin cannot be established. Its construction and ornament reflect the shared Ottoman-influenced decorative traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean, where craftsmen, materials and design vocabulary circulated between Egypt and the Levant. Handcrafted from warm-toned walnut, the settee features an impressive architectural back composed of multiple carved panels. Intricate mashrabiya openwork, turned spindle latticework, geometric fretwork, carved finials and contrasting star-form inlays create a richly layered Islamic design. The tall stepped crest rises dramatically above the central panel, while the openwork arms, carved front rails and turned feet continue the intricate decoration throughout the frame. The seat has been more recently upholstered in a textured gold-toned Moroccan...
