About the Item

Swedish Grace Side Chairs in Birch with Sculptural Openwork Backs, 1920s An elegant pair of Swedish Grace side chairs from the 1920s, crafted in beautifully figured birch and distinguished by their highly decorative openwork backs. The oval backrests immediately draw the eye. Within each frame, the wood has been shaped into a symmetrical, almost heraldic composition of sweeping curves and stylized botanical forms. The motif gives the chairs a strong architectural presence while retaining the lightness and refinement associated with Swedish Grace. The warm birch has a particularly attractive depth and movement. As the light travels across the polished surface, the natural figuring of the wood becomes increasingly visible, shifting from golden amber to deeper honey-colored tones. The restrained geometry of the frames provides a counterpoint to the more expressive backs. Slender tapered legs, subtle turned details and carefully articulated joints create an elegant vertical rhythm, while the upholstered seats introduce softness and texture. Swedish Grace emerged in Sweden during the 1920s as a distinctly Nordic interpretation of international Classicism. Designers looked toward historical forms but simplified them, combining classical proportions with exceptional craftsmanship, fine materials and a lighter, more modern sensibility. These chairs capture that transition beautifully. Their symmetry and proportions remain rooted in Classicism, yet the stylized ornament and almost graphic treatment of the backrests give them a distinctly modern character. Viewed from across a room, the oval backs read almost like individual decorative panels. Up close, the richness of the birch, the carved contours and the small variations in the wood become more apparent. A refined and highly decorative pair, particularly suited to an interior where furniture is intended to function not only as seating, but as part of the architecture and visual character of the room.
