About the Item

Vintage round basket chair from the 1950s, designed in the style influenced by Jacques Adnet's work. The deeply concave, bowl-shaped seat is woven in darker wicker with a tightly constructed rim and natural fiber highlights visible throughout. Four angled metal rod legs with a low crossbar stretcher support the seat in a gently reclined position, keeping the silhouette low and open. The design pairs the organic texture of woven natural fiber with a clean, spare metal base — a combination characteristic of French Mid-Century modern furniture. The basket chair form gained popularity in postwar Europe as designers explored affordable natural materials alongside industrial metal fabrication. Jacques Adnet, known for his work with leather and mixed materials, helped define a generation of French Mid-Century furniture that balanced craft traditions with modernist structure. Chairs in this style were produced across France and Italy throughout the 1950s, often combining handwoven seats with slender enameled rod bases. The chair is in its original, as-found condition, with visible fading and patina on the woven seat and wear, including paint loss on the enameled metal base.
