About the Item

Pierre Jeanneret (1896–1967) was a Swiss architect and designer who made a profound contribution to the modernist architecture and furniture of Chandigarh. As a cousin and close collaborator of Le Corbusier, Jeanneret moved to India in the early 1950s to help execute the city’s master plan and design many of its civic buildings, residences, and interior furnishings. His furniture designs are particularly notable for combining simplicity, functionality, and locally sourced materials such as teak and cane, reflecting both modernist principles and Indian craftsmanship. The Sewing Stool is one of Jeanneret’s most practical and elegantly designed pieces. Typically crafted from solid teak with a woven cane seat, the stool features a minimal, geometric frame that is both sturdy and lightweight. Its compact size and functional design made it ideal for homes and workspaces, while the clean lines and careful joinery reflect Jeanneret’s architectural sensibilities. Despite its simplicity, the Sewing Stool carries a strong visual identity, harmonizing with other furniture and interiors in Chandigarh. Today, it is highly valued by collectors and design enthusiasts for its historical significance, timeless aesthetic, and functional elegance, exemplifying Jeanneret’s genius in marrying utility with modernist design.
