About the Item

Designed by Percival Lafer and produced in Brazil during the 1960s, the MP-123 Modular Bench reflects the designer's innovative approach to modular furniture and exposed construction. Combining richly figured Brazilian rosewood with leather and polished steel, the piece demonstrates Lafer's ability to merge industrial production with the warmth of traditional materials. The bench features a solid rosewood frame supported by slender polished steel legs. The original caramel leather seat is suspended using the signature leather support straps that became a hallmark of Lafer's designs. Integrated into one side is a rosewood side table with a suspended leather magazine sling, creating a practical and highly distinctive multifunctional piece. The modular design also allows the side table to be positioned on either side of the bench. This example has received only a light conservation treatment consisting of careful cleaning and conditioning to preserve its originality. The original leather, rosewood, and metal components have intentionally been retained, allowing the piece to maintain the authentic character and patina developed over decades of use. It is in excellent condition for light residential or occasional use. For commercial environments or heavier everyday use, the original leather suspension straps can be professionally replaced if desired, as they exhibit minor age-related cracking while remaining original to the piece. An important example of Brazilian modern design, the MP-123 combines furniture, side table, and magazine storage into a single modular composition while expressing Percival Lafer's unmistakable structural language.
