About the Item

78331 Antique Persian Serapi Rug, 11'03 x 15'04. The Revered Crown: An Antique Persian Serapi Masterpiece of Timeless Elegance. Hailing from the Early 20th Century, this hand-knotted wool antique Persian Serapi rug possesses the commanding presence associated with the most coveted examples of Northwest Persian weaving. A grand octofoil medallion dominates the sumptuous red field, its architectural silhouette articulated through stepped contours and anchored by flaming palmette pendants. These flame-like forms carry associations with vitality, illumination, and enduring life, while the octagonal geometry creates an ordered nucleus around which the composition unfolds. The result is a stunning masterwork conceived on a scale worthy of a distinguished collection. Across the field, angular vines branch into serrated leaves, rosettes, palmettes, budding flowers, and stylized Trees of Life, forming a garden rendered through the bold vocabulary for which Serapi carpets are celebrated. The Tree of Life traditionally evokes immortality and paradise, while blossoms suggest renewal and abundance. Scattered geometric devices introduce talismanic character, lending the surrounding ornament a sense of protection and continuity. Generous spacing allows individual motifs to breathe, giving the design its coveted combination of visual authority and spirited village artistry. Ivory corner spandrels bring an architectural counterpoint to the central reserve, filled with branching vegetation that echoes the botanical language within the field. Their stepped outlines reinforce the medallion's geometry and establish a powerful relationship between center and perimeter. Abrash moving through the ground records subtle shifts in hand-dyed wool, preserving evidence of the weaving process and imparting an unmistakable sense of age. Every irregular leaf, wandering stem, and asymmetric detail contributes to the individuality that makes antique Serapi weaving so compelling. A striking Samovar turtle vine-scroll border completes the exceptional composition, its recurring palmettes linked by sinuous stems in a continuous procession around the carpet. Floral meander guard borders provide successive layers of ornament, creating a stately frame for the expansive interior. Monumental proportions, graphic draftsmanship, symbolic flora, and expressive geometry give this Serapi the stature of an extraordinary masterpiece intended to define a room. It is a collector's carpet with unmistakable prestige—an exquisite work of art whose scale, artistry, and historical character command attention without sacrificing the soulful hand of its maker. Rendered in variegated shades of red, blue, and beige with other accent colors. Abrash. Hand knotted wool. Measures: 11'03 x 15'04. Date: 1900's. Early 20th Century.
