Crafted in Rouen, France, circa 1870, this elegant antique hat box is a wonderful example of 19th-century French travel accessories. Made of richly patinated pigskin leather, the fitted case features a distinctive oval shape with gently flared sides, reinforced by brass bands along the bottom and decorative leather straps secured with brass nail heads.
The removable lid is fitted with a gracefully curved leather carrying handle and secured with leather straps and brass clasps. The interior retains its original striped fabric lining, providing a tailored compartment designed to protect a gentleman's formal hat during travel.
The case includes its original black felt top hat, known in France as a haut-de-forme, bearing the maker's label J. Poinsard, Dijon. The hat retains its classic tall crown, curved brim, and black ribbon band, reflecting the refined formal attire of the Victorian era.
During the 19th century, fitted hat cases were essential accessories for fashionable gentlemen traveling by carriage or train, protecting their delicate headwear from dust and damage.
