About the Item

On offer is a highly distinctive Antique Empire/Regency style mahogany dressing table vanity mirror. Such a piece was historically referred to as a toilet mirror or shaving mirror. It is perfectly sized for a tabletop platform, exhibiting the robust, classical architecture typical of early to mid-19th-century European and American design. FEATURES: The rectangular mirror glass is housed inside a simple, rounded mahogany frame. It pivots dynamically on side brackets between two supportive columns, allowing one to tilt it flat or to angle it as needed. This frame is flanked by two prominent tapered columns resting on wide circular plinth bases. These columns are crowned with highly decorative, turned classical finials. The most unique feature of this piece is the substantial breakfront base, designed to prevent the mirror from tipping over when one swivels or angles the mirror. Instead of traditional flat drawers, the base integrates two rolling cylindrical compartments positioned between three structural column-like brackets. The presence of these two rolling cylindrical drawers strongly suggests a creation date between 1820 and 1835. Mechanical furniture—such as roll-top desks, cylinder desks, and drum-shaped moving compartments—saw a massive surge in popularity during this exact window. It was a time when cabinetmakers loved showing off clever engineering. Prior to this, bases almost exclusively featured standard flat, pulling drawers. Further, the chunky, heavy turned bun feet grounding the breakfront profile are definitive of the late 1820s to 1840s aesthetic. The underside reveals authentic old hand-planed secondary wood planks joined with square nails and heavy structural slot screws—clear markers of period 19th-century construction. MATERIAL: The rich, dark finish highlights a deep flame mahogany veneer on the flat surfaces. Because pieces like this feature old animal-hide glues and natural veneers, place it away from direct radiators or areas with sudden humidity shifts to protect the wood from warping. Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent. Mirror dimensions: 16.75 inches high x 12.75 inches
