About the Item

An exceptional and highly decorative Swedish Modern ceiling lamp by Bjerkås Armatur, model 401 (1252), manufactured in Gothenburg during the 1940s. This impressive fixture is documented in the Bjerkås Armatur catalogue from 1943 (page 29), making it a fully catalogued and historically documented example from one of Sweden’s most respected lighting manufacturers of the period. With an imposing diameter of 75 cm, this is a true statement piece. Its generous scale allows it to command a room while maintaining the refined elegance that defines Swedish Modern design. The large disc of raw, frosted glass softly diffuses the light, creating a warm and atmospheric glow, while the beautifully executed hand-forged iron ornamentation adds sculptural depth and craftsmanship. The harmonious combination of glass and wrought iron is characteristic of Bjerkås’ finest production during the 1940s. Founded in 1927 in Gothenburg, Bjerkås Armatur became one of Sweden’s leading manufacturers of decorative lighting. The company gained a reputation for combining high-quality engineering with artistic design, producing lighting that bridged the transition from Swedish Grace into Swedish Modern. Their catalogues from the 1930s and 1940s feature an extensive range of sophisticated lighting fixtures, often distinguished by elegant proportions, decorative forged details, and beautifully worked glass. Many of their designs were created by the company’s own design department rather than being attributed to individual designers, reflecting the collaborative craftsmanship that defined the factory’s production. Documented examples by Bjerkås Armatur are increasingly sought after by collectors and interior designers, particularly large-scale models such as this. Its original catalogue documentation, remarkable 75 cm diameter, and timeless Scandinavian aesthetic make it an outstanding example of Swedish lighting design from the golden age of the 1940s.
