About the Item

This is a charming coffee set for four in the very desired "Dainty White" design of Shelley. The set was made between 1891 and 1940, as can be seen from the back stamps. The set consists of a tall spouted coffee pot, four cup trios, a large cake plate, a milk jug and a little sugar bowl. Shelley was one of the most respected potters in Staffordshire in the 20th Century and these sets are real collectors' items. The "Dainty White' design is wonderfully romantic yet down to earth; there are no decorations other than the sweetly scalloped and fluted surface of the porcelain. The porcelain itself is very thin and incredibly white. This design is great with any interior design taste; it goes well in traditional, rustic or modern styles. It would therefore make a perfect wedding gift as you can't go wrong with this! CONDITION REPORT The set is in excellent condition without any repairs or crazing. The set is mostly without any damage (and importantly the coffee pot and cups are all perfect) except a faint crack in the bottom of the milk jug (however it does not leak so is fine to use) and a tiny, hardly visible chip to the rim of the sugar bowl. Antique and vintage British porcelain is never perfect. Kilns were fired on coal until the 1930s or 1940s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. British makers were also known for their experimentation, and sometimes this resulted in technically imperfect results. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the maker's recipes, probably unknown at the time of making. Items have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear, and gilt can have signs of slight disintegration even if never handled. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger. Etcetera - I try to be as accurate as I can and please feel free to ask questions or request more detailed pictures! DIMENSIONS (diameters) cups 8cm (3.15"); saucers 14.5cm (5.75"); side plates 18cm (7"); cake plate 23cm (9") diameter; milk jug 8.8cm (3.5") high and 12cm (4.75") from mouth to handle; sugar bowl 5cm (2") high and 8.5cm (3.4") in diameter; coffee pot 18.5cm (7.25") high and 18cm (7") from handle to spout.
