About the Item

A magnificent late 19th century German silver etrog container of exceptional artistic quality, richly decorated with a highly detailed repoussé and chased depiction of a family gathered within a sukkah during the festival of Sukkot. This remarkable ceremonial object combines masterful silversmithing with deep symbolic and religious significance, serving both as a functional container for the etrog and as an expressive work of Judaica art. The domed upper section of the hinged container is centered with an elaborate embossed cartouche portraying a lively Sukkot scene. Seated around a table upon a carefully rendered stone tiled floor are members of a family enjoying a festive holiday meal within the sukkah. The figures are beautifully chased with expressive facial features, flowing garments, and animated gestures that bring the scene vividly to life. At the center, a daughter is shown serving food to the assembled guests, adding warmth and movement to the composition. The sukkah itself is richly decorated, with hanging ornaments and decorative garlands suspended beneath the roof covering of schach, which is rendered with extraordinary detail and texture overhead. Flanking the table on either side are realistic potted plants that further enhance the festive and domestic atmosphere of the scene. Surrounding the central cartouche is an ornate border of finely detailed grape clusters entwined with scrolling vines and grape leaves, motifs traditionally associated with abundance and the harvest festival of Sukkot. Between the grapevine border and the central scene is an elegant rope-twist design framing the composition and adding depth and refinement to the overall decoration. The hinged upper half opens to reveal a gilded interior intended for housing the etrog used during the holiday. The lower section of the container is equally impressive, decorated with large flowing acanthus leaf motifs engraved and embossed on both front and back, each tied gracefully with ribbon designs below. Engraved on one side in Hebrew is the dedication: “אפרים בן החבר רבי יצחק נייזטאדט,” indicating that the container was made for Ephraim, son of Rabbi Yitzchak Neustadt. On the opposite side appears the biblical verse: “ולקחתם לכם ביום הראשון פרי עץ הדר,” referring to the commandment of taking the etrog during Sukkot. Flanking these inscriptions are two finely embossed realistic potted plants that echo the decorative elements found on the upper section. Combining religious symbolism, exceptional repoussé workmanship, and finely executed narrative decoration, this extraordinary German silver etrog container stands as a remarkable example of late 19th century ceremonial Judaica and decorative silver artistry. 10.5ozt Weight

Antique Oriental Silver Box with Figural Engraving Handcrafted Qadjar Design

Antique Oriental Silver Box with Figural Engraving Handcrafted Qadjar Design

Located in Wembley, GB

Oriental Sterling Silver Box with Figural Engravings, Handcrafted Persian Design, 18th C. An exquisite Antique Qadjar Oriental silver box, delicately hand-engraved with detailed figural and floral scenes, evoking the opulence of West Asian (Persiann) artistry. Crafted in the 19th century, this circular box features a continuous frieze of courtly musicians and noble figures within arabesque cartouches, surrounded by intricate foliate borders that showcase the exceptional skill of traditional silversmiths. Measuring approximately 6 cm in diameter and weighing about 72 grams, the box’s refined decoration reflects themes of celebration, poetry, and love – central motifs in Persian miniature painting and metalwork. The lid, meticulously etched with a symmetrical medallion composition, enhances its aesthetic balance and visual harmony. Likely made for betel, tobacco, or jewellery storage, this piece embodies both functional and artistic elegance. Its time-worn patina and fine repoussé and niello-style detailing suggest careful handwork rather than machine production, typical of mid-19th-century Oriental craftsmanship. Perfect as a collector’s item or a refined gift, this silver box adds timeless charm and cultural depth to any curated display of Eastern decorative arts.
