About the Item

A fine and unusual late Victorian sterling silver novelty table cigar lighter by John Grinsell & Sons, fully hallmarked in London for 1901. Imaginatively fashioned in the form of an Aladdin’s lamp, the piece combines whimsical design with the accomplished craftsmanship of turn-of-the-century English silver. ㅤ The lighter takes the distinctive form of a miniature oil lamp, with a rounded silver reservoir extending into a pronounced spout and balanced by an elegant serpentine handle. Its instantly recognisable silhouette gives the object considerable decorative character. ㅤ The upper section is fitted with a detachable lighter stem surmounted by a stylised finial. Designed for practical table use, the removable element would traditionally have been used to transfer the flame for lighting cigars while entertaining. ㅤ The sweeping serpentine handle introduces an elegant sculptural element to the composition, while the plain circular base provides stability and creates a pleasing contrast with the more elaborate silhouette above. ㅤ All components bear corresponding hallmarks, an important detail demonstrating the integrity of the complete piece. The London marks date the lighter precisely to 1901, while the maker’s mark identifies the celebrated silversmithing firm John Grinsell & Sons. ㅤ Novelty silver objects of this type were fashionable additions to sophisticated late Victorian and Edwardian smoking tables, combining practical function with playful interpretations of familiar objects and historic forms. ㅤ Weighing 88.7 grams, the lighter has a pleasing substance while retaining its finely proportioned miniature form. It remains in very good antique condition, with no notable damage or repairs and only minor surface marks consistent with age. ㅤ The mechanism remains in working order, and the polished sterling silver retains a beautiful bright patina. The surfaces are also free from later presentation inscriptions or monograms. ㅤ A charming and highly collectible example of English novelty silver, combining an unusual Aladdin’s lamp form, identifiable maker and precisely documented late Victorian date.
