About the Item

Intricately engraved drapery swags and floral sprays encircle the interior of this solid silver oval bread basket, accented by delicate pendant tassels and suspended eight-point starburst motifs. A wide band of intertwined geometric ribbons runs directly below the reeded border, framing the sloping well, while an engraved oval medallion decorates the flat interior base. The basket is fitted with an arched overhead swing handle that folds down neatly against either side of the rim. This handle features matching reeded borders and a plain oval cartouche at its apex, left vacant for personal engraving or a family crest. The body is raised on an applied oval collet foot with reeded moulding, which provides stability on the dining table or sideboard. Constructed from heavy-gauge sterling silver weighing 987 grams, the piece was crafted by the London silversmith John Schofield in 1792. Schofield was renowned for his refined Neoclassical tableware, and clear English hallmarks—including the lion passant, crowned leopard's head, date letter, sovereign's duty mark, and maker's mark—are struck along the upper rim near the handle hinge. Proportioned generously for serving bread, rolls, or fruit, the basket measures 37 cm in length by 28 cm in width, with a bowl height of 9.5 cm. The silver remains in outstanding condition, displaying crisp engraving, smooth polished surfaces, and a strong, securely hinged handle, without dents, distortion, or repairs.
