Antique Carrington & Co Victorian Sterling Silver Inkwell Stand, London 1898
Located in Nottingham, GB
A superb Victorian sterling silver inkstand or standish, hallmarked London 1898 and made by the prestigious **Carrington & Co.** The substantial silver stand is beautifully finished with traditional gadrooned borders and richly modelled acanthus leaf motifs in relief. It is raised upon four naturalistically formed lion paw feet, giving the piece an imposing and highly decorative presence. The centre incorporates a practical lidded compartment designed for storing wax seals, pen nibs, quills and other writing accessories. Gracefully formed bowled pen rests are positioned to either side, reflecting the thoughtful functionality expected of a high-quality Victorian gentleman’s desk accessory. The stand retains its **original pair of panel-cut glass inkwells**, each fitted with a sterling silver cover. The combination of deeply cut glass and substantial polished silver creates an impressive contrast and adds considerably to the overall quality of the piece. All silver components bear matching **London hallmarks for 1898** together with the maker’s mark for **Carrington & Co. (John Bodman Carrington)** of 130 Regent Street, London. The silver base has a net weight of approximately **1,029.9 grams**, while the two covers weigh approximately 30 grams each, giving a **combined net silver weight of approximately 1,089.9 grams**. The complete inkstand, including the glass inkwells, has a **gross weight of approximately 1,438.1 grams**. Presented in very good antique condition with a beautiful bright patina. There are only minor age-related surface marks to the interiors of the inkwells, with no noted damage, bruises, chips or repairs. The piece also remains free from later presentation inscriptions or monograms. An impressive and substantial example of late Victorian English desk silver, combining the craftsmanship of Carrington & Co. with original cut glass fittings and richly executed classical decoration.
