About the Item

Shaped cobalt blue reserves edged with rococo-style gilding define this oval lidded vegetable tureen, decorated in Coalport's celebrated Batwing design, pattern number 1002. Deep mazarine blue sections are embellished with delicate gilded foliate trails and fine diapering, alternating with reserves that feature sprays of hand-painted polychrome summer flowers against the brilliant white glazed ground. The domed cover features a heavily moulded overhead loop handle finished with burnished lion-head terminals, encircled by an elaborate gadrooned rim finished entirely in leaf gold. Matching twin loop handles project from either end of the oval serving dish, similarly anchored by sculpted gilded masks that allow the piece to be carried securely. The underside of the cover bears the green printed Coalport crown backstamp incorporating the retailer crest for Thomas Goode & Co. of South Audley Street, London. Produced between 1891 and 1919, this piece demonstrates the high-calibre porcelain Coalport supplied to the premier Mayfair luxury china and glass merchants at the turn of the twentieth century. Measuring 28 cm in length across the handles, 16 cm in width, and 16 cm to the apex of the cover finial, the tureen presents impressive proportions for the dining table. The glazed surface retains its smooth clarity, while the raised and flat gilding remains notably bright across all mouldings and borders. We ship internationally, tracked. Please see our other items for sale, where we combine shipping on multiple lots. We also offer freight shipping for larger furniture pieces.
