About the Item

A wonderfully colourful antique Mason’s Ironstone jug, featuring a distinctive hexagonal form and beautifully detailed polychrome decoration. The jug is richly hand-painted with an exuberant array of flowers, foliage, birds and butterflies in vibrant shades of cobalt blue, iron red, green and yellow. The elegant shaped body is complemented by a dramatic cobalt blue and gilt handle, with its scrolling, serpent-like form characteristic of Mason’s “Hydra” style. A particularly charming example of Victorian Mason’s Ironstone, combining an unusual architectural form with the wonderfully maximalist decoration for which these pieces are so loved. A beautiful decorative jug for collectors of Mason’s, antique ceramics or colourful English country interiors. Details Maker: Mason’s, England Material: Ironstone china Pattern: Hydra-style, polychrome floral and bird decoration Period: Circa 1860–1880 Height: 7 inches Width: 5.5 inches Width including handle: 6.5 inches The decoration and form are characteristic of Mason’s Ironstone wares produced during the Victorian period. Similar designs were produced over an extended period, so the date is given as an approximate attribution.
