About the Item

This nine-piece grouping brings together four small handleless creamers, attributed to Ravenswood Pottery and dating to circa 1944, four individual butter pats, and an antique wooden butter mold. Selected to form this ensemble, the butter pats complement the creamers with dark green bands and fine lines on a white ground. The repeated decoration creates visual continuity between the pieces, while the wood provides a warm contrast to the glazed ceramics. The creamers reflect the tradition of American restaurantware of the 1940s: compact pieces with practical shapes, designed for everyday service. Colored bands allowed different elements of a table setting to be coordinated simply and effectively. Here, the green lines accentuate the rims and bases of the small pitchers and frame the butter pats, emphasizing their proportions and restrained design. The antique butter mold connects this serving ware with an earlier tradition of food preparation and presentation. Its wooden body and upper handle recall the utensils used to shape butter before bringing it to the table. Within this composition, it adds historical interest and a sculptural presence that complements the eight ceramic pieces. The grouping offers a way to begin or expand a restaurantware collection and incorporate these pieces into everyday life. The creamers and butter pats can accompany breakfast or coffee service, be displayed alongside the mold on a shelf, or be used individually. The small pitchers also lend themselves to holding a single flower or stem, preserving their simple, domestic character.
