About the Item

Modelled in the lively European trompe l'œil tradition, this decorative ceramic centrepiece depicts an overflowing harvest of apples arranged inside an oval basket. The sculpted composition forms a fixed pyramid of fruit, designed to serve as an enduring ornamental arrangement for a sideboard, console table or dining room display. Each apple is individually formed with subtle indentations and central stem impressions, coated in a warm golden-buff gloss glaze. Across several of the fruit surfaces, a fine natural network of glaze crazing has developed under the glossy coat. Tucked between the rounded fruit forms are sculptural serrated leaves finished in a rich forest-green glaze, with white glaze caught in the moulded leaf veins to accentuate the surface texture. The supporting base is modelled as a traditional woven basket in a soft off-white glaze. Its exterior displays a continuous relief pattern imitating woven wicker splints, framed at the upper perimeter by a prominent rope-twist border that follows the elliptical rim. All fruit elements and leaves are cast and glazed as a unified, permanent ceramic structure rather than loose individual components, creating a robust single-piece ornament. Probably dating from the second half of the 20th century, the assembly is unbranded and typical of mid-to-late century continental majolica-style table decorations. The oval basket measures approximately 30 cm in length by 19 cm in width, and the entire piece stands circa 22 cm in overall height. We ship internationally, tracked.
