About the Item

Broad bands of rich cobalt blue and bright sea-green wind upwards around this heavy conical vase in a dynamic spiral. The layered glass colours are subtly modulated by internal vertical ribbing, which introduces soft optical fluting that catches the light and emphasizes the transitions where blue overlaps green. Produced by Stevens & Williams at Brierley Hill, near Stourbridge, this design was introduced circa 1935 as part of the factory's celebrated Rainbow Range. The style embraced the modern aesthetic of the British Art Deco movement, moving away from intricate Victorian cutting in favour of clean contours and saturated colour combinations that react vibrantly to illumination. The vessel tapers gradually from a wide 16 cm circular rim down to a thick, weighted base. Hand-blown in quality English lead crystal, it stands 28 cm high and possesses substantial heft, providing dependable stability. The top rim is flat polished, while the base features a deep gathered foot with a polished circular pontil recess. Condition is exceptional throughout, with clear and vibrant glass free from chips, cracks, flea bites, or later restoration. The interior remains free from clouding or water staining, and there is only light, honest shelf rubbing on the ground resting ring beneath the base. With its impressive scale and radiant colourway, the piece functions equally well as a striking centrepiece or as an evocative addition to a collection of British studio glass.
