About the Item

Rare French Art Deco glazed stoneware vase by Louis Dage, made in Antony near Paris, circa 1920. The piece is distinguished by its substantial applications of glaze, creating a richly textured surface with pronounced depth and a strong sculptural presence. The vase has a balanced, compact form characteristic of Louis Dage’s decorative work from the early 1920s. Thickly applied glazes animate the surface with variations in relief, sheen, and tone, allowing light to move across the vessel in a particularly expressive way. This emphasis on material and firing effects gives the vase an individual, handcrafted character. Louis Dage began his career at the Fives-Lille earthenware factory before continuing his training in Saint-Aubin-en-Bray and later in Beauvais, an important French ceramic center associated with makers such as Gréber and Auguste Delaherche. In 1920, he founded an art pottery workshop in Antony with Louis Fontinelle, a specialist in animal-form ceramics. Eugène Val later joined the enterprise. In 1924, Dage received the prestigious title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France, recognizing the excellence of his craftsmanship. During the early 1930s, he also contributed to decorative work connected with the ocean liner Normandie, and in 1935 he went on to manage the Saint-Sever earthenware factory in southwestern France. The vase is signed “L. Dage” underneath the base. Dimensions: Height: 10 in. (25.5 cm) Diameter: 6.7 in. (17 cm) A refined example of French Art Deco ceramic design, notable for its rich glaze applications, substantial texture, and elegant proportions.
