About the Item

English Creamware Quintal Finger Vase 20th Century This English creamware quintal vase—also known as a finger or tulip vase—takes the classic fan-shaped form, with five upright fingers rising from a swelling, conjoined body on a square moulded plinth. Each finger holds an individual stem, separating blooms in a fan arrangement. The fingers are crisply moulded in relief with twisting flowering branches issuing from the lower body, their tops modelled as overlapping leaves that form a naturalistic, foliate rim. A warm, faintly green-toned lead glaze pools in the recesses in the manner long associated with the Leeds and Staffordshire creamware tradition. Dimensions Height: 7½ inches (19.1 cm) Width: 8½ inches (21.6 cm) Depth: 2½ inches (6.4 cm) Provenance Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge. Condition Good condition, with a small chip to each side of the base. Historical Context The quintal or finger vase—a five-spouted form—was a popular creamware and pearlware shape in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, produced above all by the Leeds Pottery and the Staffordshire factories, and intended to display tulips or other single stems in a fan. The form proved so admired that it was revived well beyond the Georgian period; this creamware example continues that enduring tradition, faithful to the moulded, foliate character of the original Leeds and Staffordshire models.
