About the Item

Bust of a young woman carved in alabaster, depicted in an 18th-century-inspired costume and wearing a large bonnet adorned with ribbons. Her slightly turned face is finely and delicately modelled, while the hair, folds of the garment and elaborate bonnet are treated in a more decorative and particularly lively manner. This type of female figure, inspired by the elegance and fashions of the 18th century, became highly popular in European decorative sculpture during the 19th century. The work may be associated with French or Italian production intended for refined bourgeois interiors of the period. The bust is carved from attractive pale alabaster with natural veining, including several more pronounced veins visible on the reverse that are inherent to the stone itself. It rests on an independent moulded pedestal in reddish-brown marble, creating an elegant contrast with the pale alabaster. 19th century. Good overall condition. A chip is present on the marble pedestal. Dimensions: H. 59 cm × W. 23 cm × D. 19 cm / H. 23.23 in × W. 9.06 in × D. 7.48 in.
