About the Item

A moulded hide exterior stretched tightly across an underlying structural framework defines this freestanding dromedary camel figure. The maker has rendered the anatomy with an extended, upward-reaching neck, blunt muzzle, applied external ears, and small inset glass eyes with black pupils. Tailored seams join the separate sections of hide along the underbelly, spine, and inner limbs, securing the wet-formed leather firmly against the contours of the underlying armature. The treated leather displays a rich chestnut-brown colour with darker shaded areas over the back, hump, and flanks. Fine linear creases and gathered folds are deliberately impressed into the skin along the throat, shoulder joints, and hindquarters, capturing the lean, sinewy form of the animal. Natural variation in the tanning process, combined with decades of handling, has imparted an uneven, mellow sheen to the surface, creating contrasting lighter tan tones on the exposed ridges. Probably dating from the early twentieth century, leather-sheathed animal figures of this style were manufactured in Britain as characterful decorative sculptures. Their fabrication required considerable hand craftsmanship, utilising moistened hide that was pinned and shaped over a core of carved wood, papier-mâché, or wrapped wire until rigid. This example measures approximately 25 cm in height, 34 cm in overall length from nose to tail, and 9 cm across the widest stance of the feet. Physical evidence of earlier conservation is present on several legs, where old structural repairs have secured previous breaks or weaknesses to ensure the beast stands firmly upright. The exterior exhibits customary signs of age and handling, including scuffing, abrasions to the surface finish, small losses along the seam edges, and natural crazing to the hardened hide. Both glass eyes remain securely in place, and the figure retains its complete anatomical balance. The base of each splayed foot is flattened to enable steady placement on a flat shelf or tabletop, though the historic leg joints should be handled with care. We ship internationally, tracked. Antique Thomas F. Cartier Large Elephant Signed Sculpture – Bronzed Terracotta

Antique Thomas F. Cartier Large Elephant Signed Sculpture – Bronzed Terracotta

Located in Nottingham, GB

Thomas François Cartier (1879–1943) – “Elephant en Furie” / Angry Elephant This magnificent large-scale elephant sculpture is an impressive example of the animalier work associated with the celebrated French sculptor Thomas François Cartier (1879–1943). Standing at an imposing 18 inches tall, the sculpture depicts a powerful elephant with its trunk raised dramatically upwards. The naturalistic modelling is particularly impressive, capturing the animal's muscular body, characteristic stance and beautifully textured skin. Although made from terracotta, the sculpture has been finished with a rich bronze-coloured patinated glaze, giving it the convincing appearance of an aged bronze sculpture. The warm, dark patina enhances the modelling and gives the piece considerable decorative presence. The sculpture is signed at the base and also bears a production mark associated with the maker. It is attributed to the L. Martini production house and dates from the early 20th century. Thomas François Cartier Cartier was a prominent French animalier sculptor, renowned particularly for his sculptures of animals. Born in Marseille in 1879, he studied under Georges Gardet and Victor Peter before exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français from the early 20th century. His work received numerous distinctions, including medals at the Paris Salon, culminating in a Gold Medal in 1927. Cartier's animal sculptures are admired for their powerful naturalistic modelling and close attention to anatomy and movement, qualities that are particularly evident in this imposing elephant. A Striking Collector's Piece The raised trunk gives this elephant an especially dramatic silhouette, while the substantial size makes it an excellent statement sculpture for a study, entrance hall, library, living room or large display space. It would make an exceptional addition to a collection of French animalier sculpture, Cartier bronzes...

Liberty's London Camel Sculpture with Lovely Aged Leather on Hand Carved Wood

Liberty's London Camel Sculpture with Lovely Aged Leather on Hand Carved Wood

Located in Pulborough, GB

We are excited to present this camel sculpture with lovely aged leather on hand-carved wood. It has been made for Liberty's in London. This full-grown and very realistic dromedary or camel has both great aesthetic and decretive value. They have been made for the kids of the wealthy people that shopped by Liberty's. Underneath the leather, the hide is a very well-carved wooden sculpture which is why the sizeable camel has such realistic features. It is a very realistic sculpture and a good size, it also has the original leather which makes it even rarer. We feel that the maker of this work of animal art has beautifully captured the look and soul of this majestic desert animal...
