About the Item

Striking French Art Deco ceramic horse sculpture by C.A.B. Bordeaux, made in France circa 1930. The piece is immediately distinguished by its highly stylized, almost abstract design. The horse is reduced to a series of flowing sculptural volumes: a strongly simplified head, an arched neck, and a compact body organized around a large circular opening. The interior of this opening is finished in a rich deep green glaze, creating a dramatic contrast with the satin-finished exterior in dark gray-brown tones with subtle metallic reflections. The deliberately simplified treatment of the animal is characteristic of the decorative language of the interwar period, when natural forms were increasingly transformed through geometry and abstraction into sculptural objects for modern interiors. Despite its compact scale, the piece has a strong architectural presence and remarkable visual impact. The sculpture bears the C.A.B. Bordeaux mark, associated with Céramique d’Art de Bordeaux, active in the Bordeaux region during the Art Deco period.
