About the Item

A dramatic and finely modeled bronze sculpture after Guillaume Coustou the Elder's celebrated Cheval de Marly, one of the defining masterpieces of the French Baroque and among the most recognizable equestrian sculptures in Western art. This handsome older cast captures the extraordinary movement and emotional intensity of the original composition, depicting a powerful rearing horse restrained by its determined groom in a moment of dynamic tension. Originally commissioned by King Louis XV for the royal Château de Marly and today standing at the entrance to the Champs-Élysées in Paris (with the originals preserved in the Louvre Museum), Coustou's Horse Tamers have inspired generations of sculptors and bronze founders. This example faithfully preserves the muscular anatomy of the horse, the expressive modeling of the groom, and the sweeping, windswept mane that gives the composition its remarkable sense of energy and movement. The sculpture is cast in bronze using the traditional lost-wax (cire perdue) process, with extensive hand chasing evident throughout the modeling. The rich, deep brown patina has mellowed beautifully with age, revealing warm bronze highlights across the horse's musculature, the groom's expressive face, and the flowing mane, lending exceptional depth and sculptural presence. The cast bears the impressed signature "G. C. Coustou" to the rear of the naturalistic base. At just over twenty-two inches in height, this is an ideal cabinet-size bronze—large enough to command attention on a console, library table, pedestal, or mantel while remaining practical for residential interiors. Whether displayed in a traditional library, a French-inspired drawing room, or a contemporary interior where its powerful silhouette can be appreciated, the sculpture serves as a timeless focal point. Elegant, historically significant, and universally admired, this bronze represents one of the most enduring sculptural images of the French eighteenth century and offers collectors the opportunity to own a beautifully executed interpretation of one of the Louvre's greatest masterpieces. Condition: Good overall condition consistent with age. Rich, naturally aged brown patina with attractive rubbing and highlights to raised surfaces, enhancing the sculptural modeling. Minor surface wear and light patina variations throughout as expected. Presents exceptionally well. Makers were influenced less by the West than by China, which had had a relationship with Japan stretching back thousands of years, far further than Japan’s recent association with Western powers. Artistry in bronze-work reached new heights in the Meiji period, as a number of metalworking schools developed, creating intricate pieces including vases, sculptures...
