About the Item

This is a striking bronze sculpture by John Rood (1902-1974), distinguished by its soaring vertical silhouette, richly textured surfaces, and dramatic contrast between luminous gold tones and deep, dark recesses. Its rugged metalwork, irregular edges, and strong architectural structure give the work a distinctive Brutalist-style character, balanced by fluid, organic forms. An elongated, tapering central form rises above two curved supports, creating an open, architectural composition. Within its darkened central cavity, a sinuous metal element introduces a rhythmic counterpoint to the sculpture’s strong vertical line. The expressive silhouette suggests botanical, flame-like, and totemic forms without defining a literal subject. The sculpture stands on a rectangular bronze base whose heavily worked surface complements the forms above. Its substantial height and relatively shallow depth give it a commanding presence on a console, pedestal, or substantial shelf. Signed “Rood” at the base, as illustrated. Condition: Very good condition, with no apparent damage or other issues. Surface texture and tonal variations contribute to the character of the work. About the artist: John Rood (1902–1974) was an American sculptor whose work evolved from expressive wood carvings into fluid, organic abstraction. Beginning his sculptural career in 1933, he held his first solo exhibition at New York’s Argent Galleries in 1937. Working in wood, stone, bronze, copper, and glass, Rood developed a sculptural vocabulary inspired by the human figure and the natural world. His simplified forms suggest branches, driftwood, waves, and flame, combining a strong sense of movement with sensitivity to the character of his materials. A longtime sculpture instructor at the University of Minnesota, Rood also created significant public commissions, including Persephone and Demeter for Wellesley College and The Scroll, a monumental copper and bronze sculpture commissioned for the Minneapolis Public Library. His work brings together the warmth of hand craftsmanship and the expressive freedom of modern sculpture, offering particular appeal to collectors drawn to organic forms and the relationship between art and design.
