About the Item

A heavy clear crystal frame shaped as an upright scallop shell gives this compact timepiece its distinctive fan-like outline. The design draws on Art Deco shell motifs, rendered in solid, polished crystal with deep fluting that radiates upwards to a stepped, scalloped upper perimeter and rests on an integrated flat plinth base. Set into the centre of the crystal body is a circular quartz timepiece insert framed by a broad, polished brass-tone bezel. The cream-coloured dial features black Roman numerals at each hour, an outer minute track of fine dots, and delicate black baton hands with a matching central seconds hand. The dial face is lettered with the Waterford Crystal name beneath the twelve o'clock position and marked quartz above the six. The thick crystal body displays substantial weight and clarity. Deep vertical fluting on the reverse complements the front faceting, catching and refracting ambient light throughout the curved silhouette. With its broad, solid base, the clock stands firmly upright without need for additional supports, functioning as an ornamental paperweight as well as a practical desktop timepiece. Dating probably from the late 20th century, this piece belongs to Waterford's Nocturne giftware range. The underside of the base bears the acid-etched Waterford script trademark accompanied by the pattern name. The removable battery-operated quartz mechanism is fitted into a central recess with a rubber retaining ring for easy removal during battery replacement, and is reported to be in working order. An attractive vintage 20th c., crystal table clock signed "Daum - France" on the crystal. The quartz clock mechanism also has a stylized Daum signature located below 12 o'clock. At 10' square, the clock has a strong visual presence. History And Meaning Of Anemones: It was believed that the flower sprang from the blood of the slain Adonis, who was a lover of the goddess Aphrodite. As such, anemones were often seen as a symbol of love and passion. In Victorian England, anemones were given as gifts to express love and anticipation. Founded in 1878, Daum Nancy crystal is still recognized for its manufacturing expertise. It owes its fame to master glassmaker Antonin Daum.
