About the Item

Concealed behind a discreet dual-opening mechanism, this solid silver pocket cigarette case reveals a hand-painted vitreous enamel plaque depicting a reclining semi-nude woman. She rests against soft cushions on a blue patterned settee, loosely draped in sheer gossamer fabric, set against a dark twilight background. Constructed with a plain, polished exterior and softened, contoured edges designed to sit smoothly in a pocket, the box relies on two independent push-pieces along the front edge. Operating one catch opens an internal secret compartment that frames the miniature enamelled panel, while releasing the second catch opens the full interior to access cigarettes. Inside, the dual compartments retain their rich, warm gold-wash lining, designed both to protect the silver against tarnish and corrosion and to provide an attractive contrast to the bright silver edges. Retaining lugs at either end are fashioned to secure original elasticated retaining straps. The exterior is fitted with a multi-knuckle flush hinge running along the spine, ensuring smooth movement and precise alignment when closed. Originating from Continental Europe around 1910, cases featuring hidden erotic or boudoir scenes were favoured luxury novelty items during the late Edwardian and Art Deco eras, allowing the owner to carry an intimate artwork undetected in everyday society.
