About the Item

Constructed from richly figured walnut veneer with contrasting ebonised edging, this traditional nineteenth-century dressing box is arranged with comprehensive vanity appointments and concealed storage compartments. The lid and front facade are centred with mother-of-pearl shield-form cartouches, matched by a flush brass keyhole escutcheon to the main body. Although the original key is no longer present, the brass lock mechanism remains in place, accompanied by a side brass release pin designed to spring open the lower drawer. The exterior opens to a decorative interior fitted in bottle green velvet and gold-tooled leather. Built into the underside of the lid is a framed velvet panel that drops forward when an upper release button is depressed along the inner top edge. This reversible unit reveals a dressing mirror on its opposite face while simultaneously providing access to a concealed stationery and letter compartment behind it. The main body retains an intricate two-tier arrangement. The back row houses five separate compartments holding two square glass scent bottles with faceted geometric stoppers and three cylindrical glass jars with silvered metal screw caps. Sitting forward of these is a lift-out dressing tray appointed with three engraved and pierced electroplated rectangular toilet boxes, a lidded cylinder jar, a third stoppered glass bottle, an elongated hair pin cushion, and a velvet-lined central pad for manicure tools. Lifting this fitted tray reveals a clean, polished timber well below for storing larger vanity items. A brass locking pin at the right-hand inner rim controls the lower base drawer. When withdrawn, the side drawer slides outward to reveal three long compartments lined in green fabric and separated by green leather dividers for securing bracelets, chains, and rings. Measuring approximately 30.5 cm wide by 23 cm deep and 18 cm high, the box offers a complete, highly functional configuration suitable for careful cabinetwork and textile conservation.
